  10. This program is SHAREWARE, distribution of the UNREGISTERED 
  11. version of this program is encouraged as long as it is copied 
  12. in whole and remains unaltered.  No fee may be asked for this 
  13. program itself, but a nominal distribution fee may be charged 
  14. for the diskette used to distribute this software as long as 
  15. the purchaser of said diskette is informed that the fee for 
  16. acquiring the diskette does not constitute payment of the

  20. NOTE: If you have a "ZIPPED" version of this program, or your 
  21. total program size is less than 360K, you have only one 
  22. scenery file (pp1.bmp) provided.  Additionally, the file 
  23. "VBRUN300.DLL" will not be provided in this archive. 
  24. This was done to save disk space and or download time.  
  25. VBRUN300.DLL is widely available and infact may already be in 
  26. your windows directory.  Vbrun300.dll is necessary for this 
  27. program to function. It will be necessary to obtain a copy
  28. of VBRUN300.DLL in order to install and run this program.  
  29. Registered users receive 2 high density diskettes with the 
  30. complete version of this program as well as 18 scenery bit 
  31. map files.  An extra disk of 10 more scenes is also 
  32. available for and additional $5.00.  See How Do I register 
  33. below for details.

  35. What is this program?
  36.   
  37.   1. This is screen saver for windows that will use your own 
  38.      pictures and midi files. If you prefer, you can use the 
  39.      picture files provided with the program.  This program 
  40.      will also play songs from your CD-ROM if you have one.  
  41.      You can listen to music as your pictures are being 
  42.      displayed.  You can select Password protection if 
  43.      desired.  You can leave a message on the screen for 
  44.      visitors while you are away.

  46.   2. This program can be used from the Program Group that 
  47.      it makes for windows, or it can be installed as a 
  48.      standard Window's Screen saver from Window's desk top. 
  49.      It can be used as both.
  50.   
  51.   3. If you have installed this program as a screen saver, 
  52.      but want to use it immediately from the program manager 
  53.      to leave a message or make your system password 
  54.      protected while you have to be temporarily away, you 
  55.      can do this by double clicking the Custom Screen Saver 
  56.      Icon.  If Custom Screen Saver is running from the 
  57.      program manager, it will not invoke itself as a screen 
  58.      saver even if the amount of time has passed to call it 
  59.      as a screen saver from the desktop.  This allows you 
  60.      to use the Custom Screen Saver in either or both 
  61.      capacities at once.

  63. What is SHAREWARE?  
  64.   
  65.   1. Shareware is a marketing method.  For a minimal 
  66.      investment, you can try a program to see if it fits 
  67.      your needs.  After a short trial period, you are 
  68.      expected to purchase the program by paying the reg-
  69.      istration fee if you decide to use it on a regular 
  70.      basis.

  72. How do I install the program?
  73.   
  74.   1. Install this program for Windows before it can be used.
  75.       
  76.       a. Start Microsoft Windows.
  77.       
  78.       b. Insert the disk in the proper drive.
  79.       
  80.       c. From the Window's Program Manager, select FILE MENU 
  81.          and choose RUN.
  82.       
  83.       d. Type B:\SETUP and press Enter.  Substitute your 
  84.          drive letter for "B:" if your disk is in a 
  85.          different drive.

  87. NOTE:  If you have a version of this program that is provided 
  88. without the file VBRUN300.DL_ on the distribution diskette, you 
  89. must obtain a copy of this DLL (VBRUN300.DLL) and copy it to 
  90. your windows\system directory before Custom Screen Saver can 
  91. be installed or used.

  93. How do I make it the active screen saver?
  94.    
  95.    1. Once the program is successfully installed, it may be 
  96.       selected as the current screen saver from windows.  
  97.       
  98.       a. From the Windows Program Manager, select MAIN.
  99.       
  100.       b. From MAIN  select CONTROL PANEL.
  101.       
  102.       c. From CONTROL PANEL select DESK TOP.
  103.       
  104.       d. From DESK TOP select the arrow key next to SCREEN 
  105.          SAVER.
  106.       
  107.       e. From the menu, select CUSTOM SCREEN.
  108.    
  109.    2. The above steps will select this program as the 
  110.       current screen saver.  You should push the SET UP 
  111.       button to set the features of the program up the 
  112.       way you want.  It is possible to select and preview 
  113.       pictures, MIDI files, and CD-ROM songs from set up.
  114.    
  115.    3. Push the TEST button to run the screen saver program 
  116.       as a test.
  117.    
  118.    4. Set the desired inactive time for the screen saver 
  119.       program to implement itself.

  121. How do I use the program from the Windows Program Manager?
  122.  
  123.    1. If the Screen Saver program group is not open, double 
  124.       click on it.
  125.  
  126.    2. To run Custom Screen Saver, double click on it's Icon.
  127.  
  128.    3. The program will start in the Set Up Mode.  Select the 
  129.       options you want, then push the Screen Saver button to 
  130.       start the program.
  131.  
  132. What are the program features?
  133.   
  134.   1. Registered users can add up to 100 Bit Map files to be 
  135.      viewed from anywhere on your hard disk.   
  136.   
  137.   2. Registered users can add up to 100 Midi selections to 
  138.      be played by your midi software as the program displays 
  139.      your pictures. 
  140.   
  141.   3. Use the Bit Map picture files provided if desired.
  142.   
  143.   4. Set the length of time for the picture to remain on the 
  144.      display before the next one replaces it. This time 
  145.      ranges from 5 seconds to 1 minute.
  146.   
  147.   5. Any picture can be used as long as it is in Bit Map 
  148.      form (i.e. it has been converted to the BMP format 
  149.      with the extension .BMP.)
  150.   
  151.   6. You need not copy any picture or midi file to any other 
  152.      directory to use it.  This program can find and use 
  153.      your files from any valid drive and directory on your 
  154.      computer. 
  155.   
  156.   7. You can add or delete picture and midi files and set 
  157.      the picture delay at any time through the standard 
  158.      setup button provided by windows for screen savers 
  159.      or by starting the program from the program manager 
  160.      by double clicking on it's Icon.
  161.   
  162.   8. You can used scanned images of anything you desire as 
  163.      long as the image is save in BMP form.  For an example 
  164.      use the scenes portion of the Picture menu.  One of 
  165.      the pictures is a scanned image of my children at a 
  166.      young age.  The scenes provided are images produced by 
  167.      Vista Pro (TM) by Virtual Reality Laboratories, Inc. 
  168.      The remainder of the images are original art work 
  169.      produced by Andrew Hastings.
  170.   
  171.   9. Bit maps may be displayed as full screen images or 
  172.      they can be displayed so that their original size is
  173.      retained.  If your bit map files are not the same 
  174.      aspect ratio as the screen mode you are using, you will
  175.      probably want to show them while retaining their 
  176.      original size so that no picture distortion occurs.  
  177.      If showing your images in full screen size, a frame 
  178.      will outline your bit map.  This frame will change from
  179.      time to time and even dissappear to avoid screen burn
  180.      in.

  182.  10. You can randomize the order that your images are displayed.
  183.      You need only click on the Randomize Picture Order check
  184.      box to accomplish this.

  186.  11. The speed that Custom Screen Saver uses to put your images
  187.      to the screen can be adjusted.  Simply slide the selecter
  188.      bar to the slower or faster end of the adjuster bar to 
  189.      vary this speed.

  191.  12. Most keyboard or mouse activity will terminate the 
  192.      Custom Screen Saver and return you to the application 
  193.      you were using before the screen saver started.  
  194.      However, 2 keyboard keys have special meaning to the
  195.      Custom Screen Saver program.  
  196.        
  197.        a. The " " (space) key will bring up the music 
  198.        selector bar if you are listening to CD-AUDIO from 
  199.        your CD_ROM drive.  The Custom Screen Saver may be 
  200.        terminated from the music selector by selecting
  201.        the STOP button on the selector bar. 
  202.        
  203.        b. The "M" key will toggle any MIDI music being 
  204.        played On or Off. The music can be muted or 
  205.        reinstated with this key.  The pictures you have 
  206.        selected will continue to be displayed at the 
  207.        interval set.

  209.   13.  You can use a Password to protect access to your 
  210.        computer when the Custom Screen Saver is running.
  211.  
  212.   14.  You can leave a message for any visitors you may 
  213.        have while you are away from your computer, or 
  214.        messages you may want to display to the public.

  216.   15.  CD-ROM audio is available in both the registered 
  217.        and unregistered versions.  If your CD-ROM is capable 
  218.        of playing CD-AUDIO, you can select it as the source 
  219.        of music for the Custom Screen Saver.

  221. How much does it cost to register?

  223.   1. The registration fee is $15.00  plus $3.00 for shipping 
  224.      and handling.

  252.      diskettes are offered.

  254.   5. The preferred method is to print out a registration form.  
  255.      The program can do this for you, select the Set Up 
  256.      button for screen savers in Windows, or start the program 
  257.      for the program manager by double clicking on it's Icon.   
  258.      When Custom Screen Saver Set Up shows, select 
  259.      Registration and print out a registration form.  If you 
  260.      can't do this, then just send me a note with payment

  264. What does registration do for me?
  265.   
  266.   1. I will send you 2 high density diskettes that provide 
  267.      you with the complete registered version of Custom Screen 
  268.      Saver.

  270.   2. The diskettes I send you will also contain 18 scenery 
  271.      pictures that you can use with the program. These are 
  272.      produced from actual geodetic data converted to Scenes 
  273.      by Vista Pro (TM) of Virtual Reality Labs, Inc.
  274.   
  275.   3. The registered version of this program will allow you 
  276.      to select up to 100 pictures and Midi files to be used 
  277.      by the Custom Screen Saver.
  278.   
  279.   4. You can order an additional diskette of scenes produced 
  280.      with Vista Pro.  This diskette will include an 
  281.      additional 10 scenes.

  283.   5. The registered and unregistered versions both allow you 
  284.      to use CD-AUDIO if you have a CD-ROM Drive capable of 
  285.      playing CD-AUDIO.

  292.   Q. I've got a lot of "GIF" pictures I would like to use 
  293.      with this screen saver, how do I do this?
  294.   
  295.   A. You can load the "GIF" picture into most paint 
  296.      programs and then save it as a "BMP" picture.  
  297.      Alternately, You can use one of several excellent 
  298.      shareware programs designed to convert picture files 
  299.      to different formats.  WinGif or BitEdit are two 
  300.      shareware programs available that will convert 
  301.      pictures for you.  WinGif is produced by.....

  310.   Q. Can I use this program to display picuters of my 
  311.      business or family?
  312.   
  313.   A. You will need to use a scanner to scan your images into 
  314.      a paint program.  Once it is scanned and retouched as 
  315.      necessary, save it as a "BMP" picture.  Select the User 
  316.      Bit Maps option button in Custom Screen Saver.  Find 
  317.      the file by clicking to the correct drive and directory.  
  318.      Double click on the file name and it will be added to 
  319.      the Bit Maps To Show window.  You can preview this file 
  320.      by double clicking on its entry in the Bit Maps To Show 
  321.      window.  Note: For best results, the file should be 
  322.      scanned to a 640X480x256 color resolution.  The scanned 
  323.      pictures aspect ratio should be close to that of the 
  324.      screen mode you are using for best results. If you 
  325.      don't have access to a scanner call me at the above 
  326.      number and I will discuss the possibility of scanning 
  327.      your images for you.  Prices vary.

  329.   Q. I want to use several of my own MIDI songs to be played 
  330.      by the program when my pictures are being displayed.  
  331.      How can I do this?   
  332.   
  333.   A. You can select any valid MIDI file ".mid" that is 
  334.      available on your hard disk.  It can be placed in a 
  335.      file of tunes (up to 100) that will be played in order.  
  336.      Once the last file is played, the tunes will start over 
  337.      in a continuous loop. Choose the drive and directory
  338.      that your MIDI files are on.  Double click on the 
  339.      file(s) you want to use to put them in the Midi Files 
  340.      To Play window.  You can preview any Midi file in the 
  341.      Midi Files To Play window by double clicking on it.
